Charlie and Jane have been best friends for 33 years.
&nbsp;
Although they now live in different states, Jane in Florida and Charlie in Virginia, the miles have never weakened the bond they've built over more than three decades. Their friendship is the kind we all hope to experience: one built on loyalty, laughter, unconditional support and countless shared memories. They even have several matching tattoos that symbolize the connection they've nurtured over the years.

From the moment we started the session, it was impossible not to notice the joy they bring wherever they go. Their laughter came easily. Their encouragement of one another was constant. The kindness they radiate is genuine and spending time with them was simply refreshing.

This past Sunday, July 19, I had the privilege of photographing two incredible women, Jane and Charlie, at the breathtaking Crystal Hill Gardens in Mechanicsville, Virginia. One of the things I love most about Crystal Hill Gardens is the warm welcome. Just like my first visit, owner Stuart Williams greeted us with genuine hospitality, invited us to sign the guest book, and took a few moments to chat after we finished our session. It's that personal touch that makes every visit feel special.

Another inspiring part of Jane &amp; Charlie's story is one they share personally. Both Jane and Charlie have achieved significant weight loss and perhaps even more impressively, have maintained it over time. Anyone who has experienced that journey knows it requires tremendous dedication, perseverance and commitment. From refined Creole classics to comforting Southern staples, every page reflects the contributions Black cooks have made to American cuisine&mdash;often without recognition.
The recipes are as rich in flavor as they are in narrative. You&rsquo;ll find everything from Baked Ham with Red Eye Gravy to Spoonbread, Shrimp Creole and a soul-satisfying Sweet Potato Pie. But what makes Jubilee truly special is the context Toni provides: stories of the cooks, chefs and culinary pioneers behind the food. It&rsquo;s a testament to the artistry, intellect and expertise of African American cooks who shaped the nation&rsquo;s palate.

Who Is Toni Tipton-Martin?
Toni Tipton-Martin is an award-winning food journalist, historian, and author. She has long been a champion for the often-overlooked legacies of African American cooks, bringing to light the rich tapestry of Black culinary excellence through meticulous research and passionate storytelling. Before Jubilee, she authored The Jemima Code, a groundbreaking book that examined over 150 African American cookbooks and challenged the stereotypes surrounding Black cooks. For her work, Toni has earned a James Beard Award, one of the highest honors in the culinary world, not once but twice&mdash;solidifying her place as one of the most influential voices in food writing today. She was also the first African American editor of a major daily newspaper&rsquo;s food section (the Cleveland Plain Dealer) and has served as editor-in-chief of Cook's Country magazine.
